Each appointment is roughly an hour long as we discuss standard labs, ultrasounds and testing available, why they are offered at the time they are offered at Stanford Midwifery and in standardized medicine, and the most recent evidence-based research so you can decide what makes the most sense for you, your body and your baby.
ROUTINE APPOINTMENT SCHEDULE
* Monthly until 30 weeks
* Every 2 weeks until 36 weeks

During your appointments, we also discuss and evaluate your baby’s development, how you feel in your body and spirit, questions/concerns, ideal birth vision, and what to expect postpartum for you and your baby.

Labor & Birth
On the day of your birth, we will remain in close contact via text and phone calls as soon as you think labor is starting. During your prenatal care, you (and your support person) have been provided exercises and tools to assist you during your early labor. Our frequent communication will allow your birth team to know when best to arrive - this is typically in active labor.
Once your birth team arrives, we listen to your baby & take your vitals; this is the best way for us to assess you and your baby’s well-being. We set up our medical equipment - oxygen & resuscitation equipment, sterile instruments, IV fluids, medications to prevent hemorrhages, sterile sutures & lidocaine for vulva/perineal repairs.
After we set up, we stay to monitor and support your journey through labor and birth. Once your baby is born, the golden hour is honored as you have skin to skin with your baby mostly uninterrupted. Umbilical cord is almost always cut AFTER your placenta is delivered.
Your birth team will stay with you 3-4 hours after birth to clean up, assist you in establishing breast/chestfeeding, conduct a comprehensive newborn exam, make sure you are fed and make sure that you and your baby are stable before we tuck you into bed.
Birth tubs are available for rent for $150.
Placenta Encapsulation with placenta tincture & placenta art is also an additional available service for $250.

Postpartum Care
Postpartum care is a way for Stanford Midwifery to monitor you and your baby’s development and transition after birth. At every visit, your mental and emotional health is being evaluated to make sure you are receiving the support, nourishment and care that the magical postpartum period requires. This is also an opportunity to connect and process the birthing experience with your birth team.
In home visits are provided at the following schedule:
~24 hours of giving birth to make sure that breast/chestfeeding is going well and that you are stable physically and emotionally. Should you desire to do the Newborn Metabolic Screen (heel poke test), it would be done at this visit.
Day 3 is usually when milk comes in and added breast/chestfeeding support is desired. At this visit, we also fill out the birth certificate paperwork and provide you with information for this and social security for your baby. We weigh your baby at this visit and see if your kiddo has lost weight.
2 week visit is done to make sure your healing and baby’s development is on track. We do a reweigh at this visit to make sure your baby is close to or back up to birth weight.
6 week visit is the final visit where we reweigh, check in and offer a well-person evaluation with Pap smear, if desired.
